Scuffed walls, faded rooms, and that one bright purple bedroom do the opposite. Even if the house is solid, chipped and dated paint plants a little seed of doubt. And doubt is what talks buyers into lowballing you.
Paint is also just cheap leverage. Compared to a kitchen remodel or new flooring, a paint job is one of the least expensive updates you can make, and it touches every single room a buyer walks through. Dollar for dollar, I don’t know many improvements that move the needle as much.

I’ve watched dark, closed-in rooms feel twice as big after nothing more than a lighter color went up. That’s the kind of before-and-after that sells a house.
Focus your budget on the rooms buyers weigh most heavily. The living room, the kitchen, the main bedroom, and the entryway. Those are the spaces that set the tone for the whole showing.
Exterior: Curb Appeal Closes the Deal
The outside is the first thing a buyer sees, sometimes before they even get out of the car. If your exterior paint is faded, peeling, or streaked, it drags down the impression of everything inside before they’ve walked through the door.
You don’t always need a full exterior repaint. Sometimes it’s the trim, the front door, the shutters, or a weather-beaten side of the house that gets the worst of the Utah sun. My crew and I see a lot of exteriors where just refreshing the trim and the entry makes the whole place look years younger.
Here in Utah our sun is brutal on south and west-facing walls, so those tend to fade first. Walk your own house like a buyer would and be honest about what looks tired.

I said almost always, and I meant almost. There are a couple of times I’ll tell a seller to hold off.
If your paint is genuinely in great shape, clean, neutral, and only a couple years old, you may not gain much by redoing it. And if you’re selling a home as a fixer-upper or to an investor who’s planning to gut it anyway, spending on cosmetics doesn’t make sense. In that case, save your money.
But for the average homeowner listing a lived-in house on the open market? Paint almost always earns its keep.
Don’t Skip the Prep (This Is Where DIY Jobs Go Wrong)
If you’re painting to sell, the finish has to look clean and professional, because buyers and their agents notice sloppy work. Roller marks, tape bleed, and paint slopped on the trim send the opposite message from the one you want.
